Uniting Communities is looking for a Casual resilient, self-motivated and customer-focused Shop Assistant to join our Goodwill team in Salisbury.
This is more than a traditional retail role. You’ll be working in a community-focused environment where every day can be different. You’ll engage with a diverse range of customers and community members, including people who may be experiencing homelessness, disadvantage or other challenges.
We’re looking for someone who can remain calm and professional, build positive relationships and provide great customer service, even when situations are challenging.
About the role
As a Shop Assistant, you’ll help ensure the store operates smoothly while creating a welcoming and positive experience for customers.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Providing friendly, professional customer service
- Welcoming customers and assisting them with their purchases
- Responding confidently and professionally to customer enquiries
- Processing cash and card transactions
- Maintaining accurate cash registers and daily banking
- Unpacking, sorting, pricing and displaying donated goods
- Restocking shelves and maintaining attractive store displays
- Supporting stock control and general store presentation
- Maintaining a clean, safe and tidy store environment
- Following security, Work Health and Safety and organisational procedures
- Working cooperatively with colleagues and the broader Uniting Communities team
The role requires someone who is comfortable working autonomously, using initiative and managing competing priorities. The ability to remain composed, respectful and solution-focused when dealing with challenging situations will be important.
Saturday availability is mandatory for this position and occasionally back up for leave as required.
Experience with opening and closing a retail store, including responsibility for end-of-day procedures, would be highly regarded.

- Has previous customer service and/or retail experience
- Is confident working independently and taking initiative
- Has strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrates resilience and emotional maturity
- Can manage challenging customer interactions professionally
- Is organised and attentive to detail
- Can manage multiple tasks in a busy retail environment
- Has a genuine commitment to providing positive customer experiences
- Works well as part of a team while being comfortable working independently
Experience handling cash and POS systems is desirable, as is a Certificate III in Retail or equivalent.
