What it’s like to work in community services at UC

A career in community services means seeing the whole picture, meeting people wherever they are on life’s journey, and supporting them without judgement as work towards their goals.

You’ll be part of a passionate, multidisciplinary team that works together through complex situations, shares knowledge, and celebrates progress.

Depending on your role, a typical day might look like:
  • Speaking with someone to understand their immediate needs and what they need to feel safe.
  • Helping a young person resolve conflict with their family or reconnect with school or work.
  • Supporting a couple or family to navigate challenging circumstances with calm, practical guidance.
  • Linking people with healthcare, housing support, financial counselling or legal services.
  • Providing non-judgmental support to someone experiencing alcohol or drug dependence.
  • Helping someone manage a mental health crisis and get connected to support.
  • Celebrating the moments where confidence grows, stability returns, or a new pathway opens.

Most importantly, you’ll be a steady, trusted presence for people who need someone in their corner. It’s meaningful work that draws on your empathy, resilience and commitment to creating safer, stronger communities.

You’ll be supported to do your best work with ongoing training, wellbeing resources and opportunities for reflective practice, supervision and development. Whether you’re early in your career or bringing years of experience, you’ll find a role where your work is valued and supported.
